Tuesday, 09. April 2019, Westmere House (G15), Seminar Room, Digital Research Conversations - Making Sense of Data

Making Sense of Data
Throughout the University, researchers work on their own specific projects but the tools that they use to analyse their data often overlap between different research disciplines. For this, our fourth Digital Research Conversation, we have invited speakers from a range of research fields covering the Times Digital Archive to the Large Hadron Collider to talk about the tools that they use to make sense of their data.
Speakers
Dr Nina Vyas (Dental School) - Nina will talk about how she has used tools within the image processing software Image J to implement machine learning in her research.
Laurence Hurst (BEAR Software Group, Advanced Research Computing) - Laurence teaches on the NVIDIA Deep Learning courses that the BEAR team run and will discuss our new Artificial Intelligence platform and the training that we offer.
Dr Neil Winkles (Birmingham Clinical Trials Unit [BCTU]) - As a data analyst in BCTU, Neil processes highly sensitive data so will be covering the tools that the group uses to anonymise the data so it can be made available.
Dr Viola Wiegand (English Language & Linguistics) - Viola is a researcher on the CLiC Dickens project and she will be talking about how they use computer assisted tools to study literary texts including the Times Digital Archive.
Dr Chris Parkinson (Particle Physics) - Chris is a researcher working on the NA62 experiment at CERN that generates huge amounts of data so will be able to discuss the analyses that the Particle Physics group carry out.
What to expect
Digital Research Conversations feature a number of short talks from researchers or colleagues who support research with time for discussion after each. The event will start with pizza for everybody who joins us 12:00-12:30 followed by the talks (see our blog post to find out more about the DRCs). Westmere has a lovely foyer for networking with your peers whilst enjoying free pizza and homemade brownies!
As this is the 4th in a series, we are looking for topics and speakers for future sessions. We welcome talks and input from early career researchers as well as from more experienced academics or staff from Professional Services who support researchers.
We provide vegetarian pizza (and brownies :-)) but please let us know if you have any other dietary requirements.
How to take part
Please register if you would like to attend the event as we are limited on space (and pizza!). All UoB researchers welcome (including postgraduates) and staff who support research.
We will be using the hashtag #UoBDigRes
