Dementia is the West’s most deadly illness. In 2015, an estimated 850,000 people in the UK were living with a form of dementia; the same number are thought to be undiagnosed. After her father’s slow death from the disease, Nicci Gerrard set out to explore the affliction that now touches millions of us around the world. In this talk, she will offer us offers us new ways to understand and speak about dementia, along with practical advice for how best to care for its victims.
Nicci has spoken to those affected by the disease: from people living with dementia and families trying to make sense of the changes to their loved ones, to the scientists unlocking the mysteries of the brain and therapists using art and music to enrich the lives of sufferers. Now she brings her novelist’s empathy and eloquence and social campaigner’s compassion to bear on issues such as memory, language, identity, ageing and the notion of what it truly means to care, asking in the end what really matters.

Nicci Gerrard is a writer and campaigner, a celebrated novelist with her husband as Nicci French and recipient of the 2016 Orwell Prize for Journalism Exposing Britain’s Social Evils. She is also co-founder of John's Campaign, named after her father, which has campaigned to give carers of those with dementia the same rights as parents of children to accompany them in hospital. Recognised by NHS policy makers, charities, nurses, doctors and carers, almost every hospital in the UK has now signed up to the campaign.
